Transportation, Housing, and Urban Development, and Related Agencies
Project Name: I-81 Corridor Improvement Plan
Amount of Request: $80,000,000
Recipient: Virginia Department of Transportation
Description of Request:
The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has consistently recognized the need for significant improvements along the Interstate 81 Corridor. In 2019, the General Assembly recognized the need to invest in the corridor and provide for interstate operations and enhancement. Identified in the Commonwealth’s I-81 Corridor Improvement Plan, improvements on Interstate 81 include widening to three lanes in several locations along the corridor. Widening these sections of lnterstate 81 provide several benefits including: reducing the likelihood of congestion by providing additional roadway capacity, decreasing clearance time of incidents and crashes by providing more space to clear crashes, and reducing the potential for crashes by allowing more space for vehicles to maneuver. These improvements are a significant priority for the agency. Federal financial resources will allow these improvements to move forward and release state resources to advance other improvements sooner.
Why Request is a Good Use of Taxpayer Funds:
The project is an appropriate use of taxpayer funds because the I-81 Corridor is vital to our nation’s economy. This project will reduce the likelihood of congestion, decrease clearance times for incidents, and reduce the potential for crashes.
