  Today, Congressman Ben Cline (R-VA) voted for, and the House passed, the  Protect Our Law enforcement with Immigration Control and Enforcement (POLICE) Act of 2023 (H.R. 2494), which would ensure that criminal aliens who assault law enforcement officers are removable from the United States.

“Every day, America’s law enforcement officers courageously save innocent lives, stop criminals, and keep our communities safe,”  Cline said.  “Yet tragically, violence against the brave men and women who wear the badge continues to rise and is perpetuated by President Biden’s open borders – with tens of thousands of illegal aliens pouring across the southwest border. That is unacceptable. This bill to make an assault on a law enforcement officer by a criminal alien a deportable offense is a good step toward helping to protect those who protect us.”

The POLICE Act of 2023 (H.R. 2494)

• Amends the Immigration and Nationality Act to explicitly state that assaulting a law enforcement officer is a deportable offense
• To qualify as a deportable offense, the offense must be committed:
  • While the law enforcement officer is performing official duties;
  • Because of the performance of his/her official duties;
  • Or because of his/her status as a law enforcement officer
