Rep. Cline Statement on Citizen Efforts in Defense of the Second Amendment

Congressman Ben Cline (VA-06) released the following statement regarding the grassroots efforts of citizens urging elected officials at all levels of government to defend their Second Amendment rights.

"I am thrilled to see the groundswell of support across our Commonwealth in support of our Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms. When Virginia debated whether or not to ratify the United States Constitution in 1788, our representatives insisted that the right to keep and bear arms was one of several essential liberties given to them by their Creator, and through their efforts the Second Amendment was eventually enshrined in the Constitution as part of the Bill of Rights. It would be a tragedy if our elected representatives in Richmond were to now seek gun control laws that dismantled the very protections established by their predecessors."

"Both in Richmond as a Delegate and now in Washington as a Congressman, I have made it a significant priority to stand in defense of our Second Amendment rights. I was proud to chair the Committee on Militia Police and Public Safety in Richmond, where we were undefeated in our efforts to stop gun control measures. As a Member of the House Judiciary Committee in Congress, I stood up against the Democrats' gun control bill earlier this year, successfully adding language that reduced the chances of it passing in the Senate."

"Our God-given liberties cannot be taken away by the actions of men; they can only be suppressed. When Virginians speak loudly and with one voice, the incoming General Assembly in Richmond will hear them. By expressing their First Amendment rights to their local city councils and boards of supervisors, Virginians better ensure their Second Amendment rights will be protected in Richmond next month. I stand with the people of Virginia's Sixth District and I stand with all those who defend our beloved Constitution."

Congressman Ben Cline was sworn in as the new Congressman for the Sixth Congressional District of Virginia in January of 2019. He was an attorney in private practice and served both as an assistant prosecutor and Member of the Virginia House of Delegates prior to his election last November. Cline and his wife, Elizabeth, live in Botetourt County with their two children.
