Helping Seniors Retire with Ease

This week the House passed the Claiming Age Clarity Act, a bipartisan measure that I proudly co-sponsored. This bill is designed to provide seniors with clear and straightforward information to help them plan for retirement. Many older Americans find themselves frustrated by the outdated terminology used by the Social Security Administration, which can lead to costly mistakes when deciding when to claim their benefits. These decisions may affect their finances for years to come. The Claiming Age Clarity Act updates this terminology to more accurately reflect how the claiming age impacts monthly payments.

This bill helps seniors understand the differences between minimum, standard, and maximum benefit ages. By clarifying these definitions, the act aims to prevent retirees from unintentionally shortchanging themselves, enabling them to make informed decisions that support their long-term financial security. This legislation garnered support from prominent senior advocacy organizations, including AARP, AMAC Action, and the Bipartisan Policy Center Action, all of whom recognize the critical need for clarity as families plan their futures. In Congress, I’m dedicated to ensuring that older Americans have a smooth transition into retirement, and I will continue to advocate for policies that improve the lives of our local seniors.

Keeping Children Safe from Social Security Fraud

Currently, many children struggle to obtain a new Social Security Number (SSN) until after they have fallen victim to fraud. When fraud goes unnoticed and unreported, families can remain unaware of the risk, leaving their children vulnerable for years. Additionally, changing an SSN as an adult is a complicated process that can result in challenges related to credit, employment, and government records. The Social Security Child Protection Act addresses these issues by proactively allowing children to receive a new SSN before fraud occurs. This approach helps to prevent unnecessary complications and shields families from potential financial harm from the outset. I proudly voted in favor of this common sense, bipartisan bill thi week because it aims to protect children from identity fraud before it can affect them.

Under this legislation, if a child's Social Security card is lost or stolen during the mailing process, the Social Security Administration can issue a new and different SSN for any child under the age of 14. This sensible measure ensures that these cards reach children securely, eliminating the need for families to wait for a crisis to secure their child's identity. By implementing these proactive steps, the Social Security Child Protection Act enhances protections for young Americans and provides parents with peace of mind, knowing their children’s financial and personal information is secure. No child should suffer the consequences of fraud without even being aware it occurred.

Faster Deportations, Safer Communities

For too long, failed Democratic policies have allowed an immigration crisis to overwhelm our country.  Under the previous administration, more than 10 million illegal aliens have entered and moved freely through the interior of the United States, creating a situation that demands decisive action. As a former prosecutor, I am committed to ensuring that illegal immigrants face removal proceedings promptly. The REMOVE Act, which would require that illegal aliens begin removal proceedings within 15 days of a Notice to Appear being served recently, passed out of the House Judiciary Committee. The bill, which I cosponsored, also mandates that the U.S. Attorney General conclude those proceedings within 15 days of their commencement.

Republicans have consistently prioritized restoring the rule of law, and this legislation delivers on that promise by ensuring the timely enforcement of our Nation’s immigration laws. This strong approach also sends a clear message that illegal entry into our country will not be tolerated. It strengthens border security by imposing consequences on those who attempt to bypass our legal system and completely disregard the rule of law.

Casework Win: Getting Veterans the Benefits They’ve Earned

Recently, a constituent reached out to my office for assistance regarding the status of an Aid and Attendance claim and a veterans’ pension through the Department of Veterans Affairs. Upon receiving the request, my team immediately opened an inquiry and discovered that the claim had been delayed due to a pending backfill disability rating needed to proceed.

We worked closely with the appropriate VA offices to pinpoint the holdup, verify the outstanding requirements, and ensure the case received prompt attention. As a result of my staff contacting the VA, his claim was fully processed within two business days, leading to an award of over $16,000 in retroactive benefits and an additional $2,358 per month going forward. Our veterans deserve the benefits they have fought for, and my office will always strive to ensure they receive the benefits they have earned. If you or your family need assistance navigating a federal agency, my staff at the local district office nearest to you is always here to help.

Honoring Pearl Harbor Day

This week, we remember a date that lives in infamy: December 7, 1941. On that fateful day, 2,335 Americans lost their lives in a sudden and devastating attack on Pearl Harbor, forever changing the course of history. The memory of those who perished serves as a solemn reminder of the cost of freedom and the enduring strength of the American spirit.

As we honor the sacrifices of service members and civilians, we reaffirm our commitment to never forget their courage, their service, and the enduring lessons of that tragic day in our nation’s history.
