While the federal government remains shut down, progress is finally being made as seven Democrats and one independent who caucuses with them have acknowledged the failures of their strategy. Even with the shutdown ongoing, House Republicans have continued pressing forward on critical priorities that will benefit families across the country. This includes efforts to protect U.S. sovereignty from harmful global tax proposals, push back against a misguided home insurance mandate, stand up for persecuted Christians in Nigeria, and support rural hospitals during Rural Health Month. We also take time to honor the 250th anniversary of the United States Marine Corps and to recognize the service of America’s veterans. I will continue fighting for fiscal responsibility, constitutional freedoms, and the families of Virginia’s Sixth District.

Facing the Fallout of the Government Shutdown

     The Democrats’ shutdown caused real harm to families across the Commonwealth and throughout the country. For nearly seven weeks, their refusal to negotiate created an impasse that placed major strain on hardworking Americans who depend on essential services. After 40 days of disruption and uncertainty, the Senate finally moved Sunday night to advance a proposal that could reopen the government. Seven Democrats and one independent ultimately joined Republicans in supporting a plan to fund the government through the end of January, signaling that their obstruction and failed strategy had run its course.

      Unfortunately, it did so at the expense of our troops, SNAP recipients, and federal workers who bore the brunt of this political brinkmanship. Their push for excessive spending and a radical agenda collapsed under the weight of its own consequences. Republicans stayed firm in rejecting a bloated $1.5 trillion partisan wish list that would have squandered taxpayer dollars. Americans deserve responsible leadership, not political theater that jeopardizes their livelihoods. As the House prepares to return to Washington in the coming days, Republicans will continue standing up for fiscal responsibility and the families we serve.

Safeguarding U.S. Sovereignty in Global Tax Policy

     I recently joined with my colleagues to introduce the UNtaxed Act to block the United Nations from advancing an unprecedented global carbon tax through the International Maritime Organization. Earlier this month, the IMO moved toward adopting a “net zero framework” that would function as a de facto global carbon tax on shipping, raising costs for consumers, threatening supply chains, and giving an advantage to Chinese shipyards. President Trump intervened and pushed the IMO to postpone the vote for one year, but Congress must act to ensure no foreign entity can impose taxes on the American people.

     The UNtaxed Act prohibits federal funding for any UN agency that attempts to impose or enforce such a tax and ensures the Senate has the right to approve any UN-related tax measure before it can take effect in the United States.

     This important legislation protects American workers, consumers, and energy producers from harmful international mandates, preserves U.S. sovereignty, and provides long-term certainty as global negotiations continue. I will always stand up for American taxpayers and oppose any attempt by foreign bodies to impose burdensome taxes on our country.

Defending Affordable Insurance Options for Homeowners

     Last week, I signed a letter with more than 40 House Republican colleagues urging the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) to reverse a Biden-era mandate that restricts homeowners’ insurance options. This policy has raised serious concerns that it will reduce competition, increase costs, and place added strain on families already struggling with housing affordability.

     Our letter calls on FHFA to protect homeowners by restoring flexibility and ensuring the housing finance system supports genuine consumer choice. It stresses that Washington should focus on lowering costs for American families rather than limiting their options and urges the agency to reverse course for the sake of taxpayers and homeowners nationwide.

Standing Up for Persecuted Christians 

 Terrorist groups in Nigeria are killing thousands of Christians every year, and President Trump has made it clear that the United States will lead in confronting this violence and defending people of faith around the world. Religious persecution is spreading unchecked across the globe, and freedom of religion, a fundamental right protected by our Constitution, remains under attack. The United States will not remain silent, will not be complacent, and will not turn away while Christians face violence and discrimination simply for their faith. The persecution of Christians anywhere is a threat to religious freedom everywhere.

     I support the President’s decision to designate Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern and will continue working with my colleagues to ensure that targeted Christian communities receive the attention and aid they need. In Nigeria alone, more than 50,000 Christians have been martyred, and over five million have been displaced simply for professing their faith. I was proud to be a cosponsor of a resolution condemning the persecution of Christians in Muslim-majority countries around the world. The mass killing of Christians has not been reported on enough, and I am proud to join my colleagues in bringing this critical issue to the attention of millions. America must always stand up for the right to worship freely and without fear.

Rural Health Month: Honoring the Heart of America’s Healthcare

     November is Rural Health Month, serving as a vital reminder of the crucial role rural hospitals play in our communities. Here in Virginia’s Sixth District, we’re fortunate to be served by five rural hospitals: LewisGale Hospital Alleghany, Bath Community Hospital, Carilion Rockbridge Community Hospital, Shenandoah Memorial Hospital, and Page Memorial Hospital. During the government shutdown, I visited both Carilion Rockbridge Community Hospital and Bath Community Hospital to see firsthand how their dedicated staff continued to deliver high-quality care to local patients.      

     In Congress, I was proud to support legislation that will provide $50 billion for rural hospitals across the country so they can continue serving the families who rely on them every day. I thank all the rural healthcare providers, doctors, nurses, and support staff for all they do for our local communities. Their commitment ensures that families in small towns and rural areas have access to the quality care they deserve. Strengthening rural healthcare is essential to keeping our communities strong and ensuring no one is left behind. I will continue fighting to protect these hospitals, expand access to care, and support the dedicated professionals who serve on the front lines.

Honoring 250 Years of the Few, the Proud, the Marines

     For 250 years, the United States Marine Corps has answered the call to serve, protecting America on land and at sea and embodying the symbolism of the Eagle, Globe, and Anchor. Their legacy is defined by courage, discipline, and an unbreakable commitment to defending the freedoms we cherish as Americans. The iconic image of six Marines raising the flag on Mount Suribachi during the Battle of Iwo Jima on February 23, 1945, continues to inspire Americans today and stands as a powerful reminder of the sacrifice and resolve that define the Marine Corps.

Thank You, Veterans: America Salutes You

     We pause to honor every veteran who has given their service to our country in defending the freedoms we enjoy as Americans. Their courage, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment to our nation embody the very best of who we are. Because of their service, generations of Americans have lived in safety and with enduring liberty. We are forever indebted to the families who stood behind them and shared in their sacrifice. May God continue to bless our American heroes. We salute you.

Out and About in the Sixth District 

I had the honor of presenting a copy of my House Floor speech to the Glenvar High School boys' soccer team, who were the Virginia Class 2 State champions for the third consecutive year in 2025.

It was an honor to speak at the Veterans Ceremony at the Monterey Courthouse, hosted by the Bolar Ruritan Club, to recognize our local heroes who have dedicated themselves to defending American ideals. The event was a powerful reminder that freedom carries a cost, and it is always worth defending.

It was a pleasure to present a copy of my House Floor speech in celebration of the Glenvar High School 2025 boys’ swim team for winning their second consecutive State title. Way to go, Highlanders!
